David Bowie: Forever A Legend

David Bowie
Today would have been the late singer’s 73rd birthday.

73 years ago, a baby boy was born by the name of David Robert Jones. Little did the world know then that a showman, a legend, an icon was born.

David Bowie is easily one of the most influential artists not just in the 20th century…but ever. He was someone who was so effortlessly themself and never let anyone tell them otherwise.

In both music and movies, Bowie showed a creative force that no one could ever close to replicating. With his own unique style, which often was androgynous, Bowie opened doors for others who were far from normal, in the best way.

Bowie was such a performer in his time, bringing costume and theatrics to the stage, which wasn’t very common then. His videos often included him in make-up which, while many were put off by it, helped shape the music, film and fashion we know today.

The Showman

From his first album, Hunky Dory, to his last, Blackstar, Bowie has tons of hits under his belt. With him constantly reinventing his stage personas, fans were always eager to see who and what David would do next. Here are some of his personas.

David Bowie: Though this is his regualr standard self, he did give himself a new last name. From Jones to Bowie. He named himself after American pioneer and creator of the Bowie knife, James Bowie.

Ziggy Stardust: A bisexual demigod in red boots. This was character that gave Bowie the breakthrough he needed. The album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars  is now considered one of the greatest albums of all time and his songs provide a critical note on matters like politics, drugs and sexual orientation.

Aladdin Sane: “A lad insane” is said to be Bowie’s “half brother Terry who has schizophrenia.” Aladdin came to light when Bowie killed off Ziggy Stardust onstage at a London gig, introducing his new era. The Aladdin Sane album which features the self titled track and the hit “The Jean Genie.”

The Thin White Duke: This persona happened during David Bowie’s “dark years.” He was struggling with a heavy hard drug addiction and stress. From here came the album, Station to Station. This alter ego is a troubled man, who sings of romance but is completely numb to feelings. The Duke had platinum blond hair and was usually dressed in a white shirt, black trousers and a waistcoat. It is his most controversial persona and the Thin White Duke has been called a psychopathic aristocrat and an immortal zombie.

The Blind Prophet: His last and most heartbreaking character. The Blind Prophet came from the Blackstar album. In the video Lazarus, he is a blind prophet telling himself of his own death. This whole album is a goodbye message to his adoring fans. Knowing he was dying and wouldn’t be around much longer, he wanted to give one last gift. It even features the lyrics “look up here, I’m in heaven,” hoping to give fans a slight ease.

The Actor

Bowie’s film and television career are almost if not equally as impressive and inspiring as his music career. He held leading roles in several feature films, including The Man Who Fell to Earth, Just a GigoloMerry Christmas, Mr. LawrenceThe HungerThe Linguini Incident, and arguably his biggest film Labyrinth.

You can’t forget the endless amounts of documentaries made!

The Influencer

David Bowie has influenced some of the greatest artists of today. Most notably, Harry Styles as of recent. Harry Styles, we can wholeheartedly say, is the David Bowie of the recent generation. Pushing gender boundaries and being openly fluid. Bowie influences can be heard in Harry’s self-titled album and his recent album, Fine Line. Let’s not forget the fashion!

Another popular artist that takes direct influence from David is Lady Gaga. From Gaga’s first big hit, “Just Dance,” which featured her rocking a lightning bolt over her eye. Gaga has always expressed her love and admiration for the late singer. She even sports a portrait tattoo on her ribs of him.

Splash News

When Bowie passed, at the Grammy Awards that year, Lady Gaga honored him by performing a stunning performance of a Bowie medley. Starting with “Space Oddity” she performed variations of his biggest hits like “Changes,” “Suffragette City,” “Fashion,” “Let’s Dance,” and “Heroes.” While, of course, she nailed the vocals, she even dedicated her look that night to him, complete with the campy outfits, orange hair, and dramatic outfit changes. You can watch the full performance here.

A Legend Forever

Though he is now gone, David Bowie lives on forever through his movies, music, and family. A biopic movie is said to be in the works, however, it is also said that David’s family refuses to hand over the rights to his music.

David was a legend in music and film for his unique style and creativity, but he was so much more than that. He was unapologetically himself which was so rare for him on time. Wearing makeup, dresses and being openly bisexual were things that he did way before they were deemed “okay.” He has opened the door for not only musicians but people who just want to be themselves.

Bowie will forever be one of the greatest icons to ever grace the world.

Forever a legend.

Movies To Look Forward To In 2020

2020 is going to be a huge year for the entertainment industry! Music, fashion, TV, and of course, movies! The new year hasn’t even really started yet and we’ve already got an all-star line up of movies that are going to make the next year so memorable!

The Year Of Bad-Ass Women

They said: “Superhero movies but make it bad-ass women.”

Next year it seems we’re getting the dose of Femme Fatal that we crave because our favorite women are back and ready to kick some ass. The first movie to come out of this gorgeous tri-Fecta is Birds Of Prey on February 7th.

Birds Of Prey: And The Fabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn is set to follow Harley Quinn after her break-up with the Joker, which is where the subtitle comes from. This movie has been getting mixed reviews due to the Harley Quinn studded trailers but either way… We’ll be there for the first screening.

March 27th we get one of the most anticipated Disney live action movies, Mulan. Sure there’s no musical number, Shang, or Mushu. But we get to see a kick-ass woman bring honor to her family. We have high hopes.

Black Widow is next to come out on May 1st, and I think it’s safe to say that this is the movie we’ve been waiting for almost 10 years now. If anyone deserves their own stand alone-movie, it’s Natasha Romanoff. Marvel just wanted to twist the knife one more time. Oh and David Harbour is in it.

Wonder Woman 1984 comes out June 9th and we’re ready to see Gal Gadot in her element. She plays Diana with such elegant, poise, and edge, we cannot wait to see what else she brings. And her together with Chris Pine… *Chef’s Kiss*

Horror

Next year we’re getting our spooks in because we’re getting movie after movie. Starting January 3rd with The Grudge.

The Grudge that is set to release is a reboot of the original movies. It stars Harold and Kumar‘s, John Cho. However, this movie will be far from funny. As we can see from the trailer and poster it will feature the iconic shower scene… Which is unsettling enough.

Next, we have The Turning, which comes out January 24th. This movie is a modern take on the book and movie The Turning of The Screw. It stars our generations‘ price of darkness, Finn Wolfhard, along with Mackenzie Davis.

A Quiet Place 2 comes out March 20th, and we’re already holding in our screams. The first movie was a surprise box office smash, so naturally a second one had to be made.

Alas, Halloween Kills is set to release this year. It serves as a direct sequel to the 2018 Halloween movie. Of course, starring queen Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie as she yet again, battles Michael. This time around she gives no fear and is ready to protect her family at all costs. We stan.

Family

There are so many family flicks coming to the big screen next year so get the kiddo’s ready!

RDJ is back in theaters January 17th but this time as Dr. Dolittle. Dolittle takes place in 19th-century England (so he has an accent), having Dolittle and his creature friends on a mission to get a cure for a sickness that the Queen has.

Sonic The Hedgehog is a movie that’s centered around quite the controversy. After being pushed back due to fan backlash to the original design, it’s back and ready for release on Valentines day. Though the new design is 1000% better, people are still hesitant. If you need a reason to go see it, here’s one: Jim Carrey.

Next for release is SCOOB!, which seems to be a quite animation of how Shaggy and Scooby became best friends to them being abducted by aliens. This looks like the cute family film it’s meant to be. We just have one small complaint, and that’s Matthew Lillard isn’t the voice of Shaggy… But we’ll still be there!

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the next installment in the OG Ghostbusters saga. Featuring (no surprise here) Finn Wolfhard, the amazing Paul Rudd, and up-and-coming star McKenna Grace. July 11th we’ll see Finn and McKenna vs Ghosts. Sign us up!

Action / Adventure

2020 is going to be action packed!

To start the year off right, we get a ‘sequel’ we’ve been waiting for, Bad Boys For Life. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have the ultimate comedic duo chemistry, which is why the first two films did so well. We’re ready for them to come back better and funnier than ever.

The Gentleman which comes out the 24th of January, features a star-studded cast. Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Jackman, Collin Ferrel, Henry Golding, Hugh Grant, and Charlie Hunnam. It’s the British vs Oklahoma of all places.

No Time To Die is the end of a brilliant saga. This is Daniel Craig‘s last go as 007 himself, James Bond. After 15 years, this James Bond story will be over. There’s already talks about the next 007, but let’s get through this hard break up in April first.

Godzilla VS Kong, another fun action-packed battle between 2 giant-sized monsters! Starring Millie Bobby Brown and Alexander Skarsgård, this film will crush it.

Super

As you can tell from the beginning, this is another year for comics!

Morbius is personally one of our highest anticipated films. Jared Leto as a vampire… Yes, please. July 31st cannot come fast enough. All we can think is what if we get both Toms and Jared in one movie together… Wow… Magic.

Even though there are no details yet, according to IMDB the sequel to Venom is set to come out October 2nd! No plot or casting is confirmed yet, but we’re ready and waiting!

The Eternals. When Disney announced this during D23, it’s safe to say that the internet went crazy. With an all-star cast and highly anticipated characters coming to life… November 6th cannot come fast enough.

Comedy

What’s a year without laughter! There’s some new movies coming our way and sequels to legendary movies that we’re not ready for.

April 24th Bad Trip hits theaters! This is basically Eric Andre‘s take on the Jackass movies… But not as intense… Unsuspecting public + pranks + hidden cameras can never go wrong.

Free Guy comes out July 3rd and honestly, just by the trailer we can tell we’ll see this movie like 3 times. This movie looks like a live-action GTA game mixed with Tron and Deadpool. That sounds pretty amazing ngl.

Coming to America, Eddie Murphy is back and we’re living. After his hosting gig at SNL and seeing Dolemite Is My Name, we are more than ready for this comeback August 7th!

On August 21st they’re back and more excellent than ever! Bill & Ted Face The Music is the movie we’ve been waiting 29 years for! The last Bill & Ted movie came out in 1991… So it’s safe to say we’re due for some more Keanu.

Keanu VS. Keanu Battle In 2021

keanu

On May 21st 2021 we will be blessed with not one, but two Keanu Reeves movies!

2019 was a huge year for our guy, and it doesn’t seem like he’s slowing down.

Earlier this week it was announced by Warner Bros. that Matrix 4 will be released on May 21st, 2021.

Coincidentally this is the same day that Lionsgate is set to release John Wick 4!

It’s a battle of the Keanu‘s for the studios, but a happy Keanu Reeves day for us!

MDRN’s Favorite Festive Flicks

festive flicks

Grab the snacks, get your laptop, and build a pillow fort. It’s finally an acceptable time of year to watch Christmas movies! There’s so many out there, it can be hard to choose what to watch. But never fear, MDRN is here. Here’s a rundown of our favorite festive flicks…

Our Top Choices

A Christmas Prince

Who doesn’t want to fall in love with a handsome prince and become a queen? Hello! We do! The film was so popular, it was followed by The Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding, with the third film, A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby, set to be released on Netflix tomorrow!

The Princess Switch

What can we say, Netflix kills it when it comes to Christmas romance films! And The Princess Switch is no exception! Vanessa Hudgens plays doppelgängers Stacy, and Lady Margaret Delacourt (Duchess of Montenaro and fiancée of Crown Prince Edward of Belgravia). The two switch places, and ultimately love interests, and we just have one question: How do we sign up? We’d really be happy with either life. Hook us up, Netflix! We’re not fussy!

Elf

SANTA? WE KNOW HIM. (Santa… If you’re reading this… Can we have free pizza for life as our Christmas gift please?) Also, how can we eat that much candy and not put on any weight? Asking for a friend…

How The Grinch Stole Christmas

This is the best version of The Grinch. Dont @ us. We will die on this rock.

Home Alone

Christmas doesn’t start until you watch Home Alone. We don’t make the rules…

Nightmare Before Christmas

What. A. Classic. Shame on you if you haven’t seen The Nightmare Before Christmas. Here’s the trailer to show you what you’re missing…

Die Hard

We’ll just leave this one here… Blame Garry.

Why Buddy The Elf Is The Boyfriend You Need

Buddy The Elf

When people watch Elf, do they actually watch it? Do they really pay attention to what’s going on? Or do they just laugh at Buddy the entire time? He’s actually the PERFECT boyfriend.

Here at MDRN Mag, we feel that Buddy doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. Just think about it… He’s so considerate and funny… And Will Ferrell. But that part is beside the point. We have watched this movie about a million times. and each time it becomes more and more clear that we need a Buddy by our side.

He’s open about his feelings.

He’s great at planning dates.

He’s invested in conversation and wants to actually talk to you.

He’s a gentleman and will never swear around you.

buddy

He’s literally so supportive.

buddy

He really wants to know everything about you.

buddy

He tells you the important things.
