David Bowie: Forever A Legend

David Bowie
Today would have been the late singer’s 73rd birthday.

73 years ago, a baby boy was born by the name of David Robert Jones. Little did the world know then that a showman, a legend, an icon was born.

David Bowie is easily one of the most influential artists not just in the 20th century…but ever. He was someone who was so effortlessly themself and never let anyone tell them otherwise.

In both music and movies, Bowie showed a creative force that no one could ever close to replicating. With his own unique style, which often was androgynous, Bowie opened doors for others who were far from normal, in the best way.

Bowie was such a performer in his time, bringing costume and theatrics to the stage, which wasn’t very common then. His videos often included him in make-up which, while many were put off by it, helped shape the music, film and fashion we know today.

The Showman

From his first album, Hunky Dory, to his last, Blackstar, Bowie has tons of hits under his belt. With him constantly reinventing his stage personas, fans were always eager to see who and what David would do next. Here are some of his personas.

David Bowie: Though this is his regualr standard self, he did give himself a new last name. From Jones to Bowie. He named himself after American pioneer and creator of the Bowie knife, James Bowie.

Ziggy Stardust: A bisexual demigod in red boots. This was character that gave Bowie the breakthrough he needed. The album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars  is now considered one of the greatest albums of all time and his songs provide a critical note on matters like politics, drugs and sexual orientation.

Aladdin Sane: “A lad insane” is said to be Bowie’s “half brother Terry who has schizophrenia.” Aladdin came to light when Bowie killed off Ziggy Stardust onstage at a London gig, introducing his new era. The Aladdin Sane album which features the self titled track and the hit “The Jean Genie.”

The Thin White Duke: This persona happened during David Bowie’s “dark years.” He was struggling with a heavy hard drug addiction and stress. From here came the album, Station to Station. This alter ego is a troubled man, who sings of romance but is completely numb to feelings. The Duke had platinum blond hair and was usually dressed in a white shirt, black trousers and a waistcoat. It is his most controversial persona and the Thin White Duke has been called a psychopathic aristocrat and an immortal zombie.

The Blind Prophet: His last and most heartbreaking character. The Blind Prophet came from the Blackstar album. In the video Lazarus, he is a blind prophet telling himself of his own death. This whole album is a goodbye message to his adoring fans. Knowing he was dying and wouldn’t be around much longer, he wanted to give one last gift. It even features the lyrics “look up here, I’m in heaven,” hoping to give fans a slight ease.

The Actor

Bowie’s film and television career are almost if not equally as impressive and inspiring as his music career. He held leading roles in several feature films, including The Man Who Fell to Earth, Just a GigoloMerry Christmas, Mr. LawrenceThe HungerThe Linguini Incident, and arguably his biggest film Labyrinth.

You can’t forget the endless amounts of documentaries made!

The Influencer

David Bowie has influenced some of the greatest artists of today. Most notably, Harry Styles as of recent. Harry Styles, we can wholeheartedly say, is the David Bowie of the recent generation. Pushing gender boundaries and being openly fluid. Bowie influences can be heard in Harry’s self-titled album and his recent album, Fine Line. Let’s not forget the fashion!

Another popular artist that takes direct influence from David is Lady Gaga. From Gaga’s first big hit, “Just Dance,” which featured her rocking a lightning bolt over her eye. Gaga has always expressed her love and admiration for the late singer. She even sports a portrait tattoo on her ribs of him.

Splash News

When Bowie passed, at the Grammy Awards that year, Lady Gaga honored him by performing a stunning performance of a Bowie medley. Starting with “Space Oddity” she performed variations of his biggest hits like “Changes,” “Suffragette City,” “Fashion,” “Let’s Dance,” and “Heroes.” While, of course, she nailed the vocals, she even dedicated her look that night to him, complete with the campy outfits, orange hair, and dramatic outfit changes. You can watch the full performance here.

A Legend Forever

Though he is now gone, David Bowie lives on forever through his movies, music, and family. A biopic movie is said to be in the works, however, it is also said that David’s family refuses to hand over the rights to his music.

David was a legend in music and film for his unique style and creativity, but he was so much more than that. He was unapologetically himself which was so rare for him on time. Wearing makeup, dresses and being openly bisexual were things that he did way before they were deemed “okay.” He has opened the door for not only musicians but people who just want to be themselves.

Bowie will forever be one of the greatest icons to ever grace the world.

Forever a legend.

The Devil All The Time Set to Star Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, and Robert Pattison

Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Bill Skarsgård, and Robert Pattison are officially announced to star in the heavily anticipated 2020 release of The Devil All the Time. Fans are dying to know what director Antônio Campos has up his sleeve! The cast is pretty impressive, with stars like the above alongside Haley Bennett, Jason Clarke, Mia Wasakowska, and Riley Keough

The made for Netflix movie will be an adaptation of the novel, written by Donald Ray Pollock. With cinematography by Lol Crawley, we can only be certain that this film will be a masterpiece. Crawley has worked within television and film for years – his earliest project dating back to 2008. Several awards have been won for his work, including an award at the Sundance Film Festival for Excellence in Cinematography. His notable work references Black Mirror’s episode, “Crocodile” (2017), and Coldplay’s 2011 music video, “Charlie Brown.”

The Details

The movie, much like the book, will follow a cast of bizarre characters nearing the end of the Second World War, up to the 1960s, throughout southern Ohio and West Virginia. The characters include a disturbed war veteran, a husband and wife pair who turn out to be serial killers, and a false preacher. Tom Holland, who graces us with his adaptation of Marvel’s Spider-Man, takes on the role of Arvin Russell. As the central protagonist; he faces multiple collisions with corruption and destructive impulses – it’s likely Holland will have the most screen time.

Holland plays possibly the most complex character in the film; a good guy at heart, but also not afraid to use physical violence to take revenge on those who wronged him, or someone he cares about. Carrying a lot of emotional trauma and baggage, he will prove himself to be good willed, but a violent man.

Holland will play Willard Russell’s (Bill Skarsgård) son, who was once bullied at school but now isn’t afraid to use his fists when necessary. Willard, the tortured war veteran, is desperately trying to save his dying wife, Charlotte (Haley Bennet), by turning to ‘sacrificial prayer.’ Jason Clarke and Riley Keough will also take on the roles of Carl and Sandy Henderson, the serial killer husband and wife duo. The pair prowl America’s highways in search of models to photograph and then dispose of them. Lastly, Pattinson will take the role of Pastor Teagardin, who has a penchant for young girls. Additionally, the film will feature Harry Melling as Roy Laferty, Douglas Hodge as Tater Brown, Mia Wasikowska as Helen Hatton, Eliza Scanlen as Lenora Laferty, and Jason Collett as Gary Matthew Bryson

What else do we know?

In early September 2018 when the film was announced, Tom Holland, Robert Pattison, Chris Evans, Mia Wasikowskam, and Tracy Letts were all in talks to star. Unfortunately for die hard Chris Evans fans, the star dropped out of the film after scheduling conflicts. But, don’t worry, Marvel fans, Evans recommended that Stan take his place in the film. Stan will take on Evans’s role as Lee Bodecker, a corrupt lawman and Sandy Henderson’s (Mia Wasikowska) brother.

The Devil All the Time is due to release via Netflix’s streaming services, while filming began in Birmingham, Alabama. Filming officially started on February 19, 2019 and later concluded on April 15. Randall Poster, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker will produce the film. There is currently no official release date for the film.

Emmy Nominations 2019

Leading the pack with 32 nominations, HBO series Game Of Thrones has set the record for the most Primetime Emmy nominations for a show in a single year.

HBO earned 137 nominations overall, beating its own record for most noms for a network in a single year, after landing 126 in 2015. Netflix came in second with 117 Emmy nominations after topping HBO last year. NBC came in third with 58 total, followed by Amazon with 47 Emmy noms.

After already nominating 7 actors (Kit Harrington, Lena Headley, Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), HBO failed to nominate 3 further Game of Thrones actors for an Emmy, but they nominated themselves, and successfully secured their own place (Alfie Allen, Carice van Houten and Gwendoline Christie).

The 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards, honoring the best in TV programming, will be handed out Sunday, Sept. 22. The show will air live on FOX starting at 5 p.m. PT from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, with a host yet to be announced.

A Stand Alone Film – MIB:International (2019)

On June 15th, 2019 MIB: International (2019), a reboot of the classic film, Men In Black (1997), was released. Many critics have made the mistake of comparing it to the original MIB films. Even though it is part of the same franchise, Men In Black: International (2019) is no sequel. This film certainly stands on its own without the help of the previous MIB films.

The new film is an entirely new story. So it would be unfair to compare the likes of Will Smith to Tessa Thompson or Chris Hemsworth to Tommy Lee Jones. Reason being, that each film has no correlation. The intention of the new film is not to continue a story or to retell an old one. MIB:International (2019) tells a new tale.

Photo: Sony Pictures

A Brief Synopsis…

MIB: International (2019) is a must see film in which director, F.Gary Gray, reunites Thor: Ragnarok (2017) co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. The introduction of a female lead as a new agent for the Men in Black is refreshing and well executed. The chemistry between Hemsworth and Thompson is comedic and genuine.

Thompson portrays young, new, Agent M, formerly known as Molly. As a child, she has a first-hand encounter with an extraterrestrial being that sparks her interest in the Men in Black. Through her countless efforts, Molly finally discovers the Men in Black where she would soon meet future colleague, Agent H. Chris Hemsworth plays the notorious Agent H, who is a senior agent that somehow seems to be even less informed on the industry in which he works than his trainee, Agent M. This dynamic duo takes each challenge as it comes, solving each one in the most unorthodox possible way.

CGI and Other Filming Techniques

There is no doubt that as time goes on, the expansion and development of new technology continues to grow. Even in modern times, computer-generated imagery is difficult to pull off and it is rare to see it executed well. MIB: International (2019) actually does a marvelous job in incorporating CGI, with out over doing it. Furthermore, the vast amount go CGI used within the film is no surprise.

I mean, how else would we expect some of the fictional characters to come to life?

Photo: Sony Pictures

One particular character brought to life using CGI is none other than the tiny, green alien, Pawny. This adorable creature, voiced by Kumail Nanijani, certainly steals the show with his comedic relief. Almost every time Pawny had a speaking part, we had to stifle our laughter to be courteous to the other viewers in the theater. Another filming technique used was the proper use of camera angles. Using Pawny for another example, his small stature means that he sees the world very differently than the human species. In general, most dialogue scenes use straight on close ups that transition back and forth between the characters speaking. However, when Agent M and Agent H first meet Pawny, we see a new point of view. Using a low camera angle, viewers are able to look up at the two agents from Pawny‘s perspective.

Overall…

Men In Black: International (2019) is undoubtedly hilarious, which came as a pleasant surprise. Many reboots and remakes try too hard to force in the humor. It is likely that Hemsworth and Thomspon‘s past work together in Thor: Ragnarok (2017) helped in making sure that the humor came off genuine. Agent M is likable and easy to relate to as she expresses her humor through her goofy nature. Meanwhile, Agent H‘s charm and self-absorbedness comes off even funnier. Hemsworth even tosses his marvel fans small reference joke to Thor somewhere within the film.

As previously stated, the two films, MIB (1997) and MIB:International (2019), cannot be compared. Overall the new film is catered to the more modern audience. Any original Men in Black (1997) fans returning in hopes of a nostalgic feeling might be disappointed.

Men In Black: International (2019) is a funny, well executed, stand alone, sci-fi film that will not disappoint!

Endgame’s End

Endgame-movie-poster-all-avengers

April 26th, 2019 the world experienced something never before seen in Cinematic history. In one night, records were broken and made, lives were changed forever, and a 10-year story concluded. Avengers: Endgame.

The fourth Avengers installment shattered records around the world. Starting with the record for the highest number of pre-sale tickets sold in AMC, Atom, and Fandango history. Within the first hour of sales, eager fans even managed to crash the Fandango website. Highly surpassing the previous record holder, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Throughout its running time, Endgame has managed to achieve the record for the highest grossing opening weekend, coming in at $1.223 billion dollars. Followed by the shattering record of fastest movie to reach $2 billion in just 11 days!

Originally, it was thought that Endgame would easily surpass Avatar for the highest grossing film of all time. However, it seems that is not the case as the Endgame theatrical run comes to an end. As of right now, Endgame has a total grossing of $2.742 billion, sitting just under Avatar whose grossing is at $2.788 billion. With multiple shocking plot deaths (and revivals) it is unclear exactly what is to come next in the MCU.

Here’s what we do know.

Spiderman-far-fraom-home-move-poster-coming-soon
Far From Home / Marvel Studios

July 2nd, 2019 will be the official end of Phase 3 for the MCU, with Spider-Man: Far From Home.  While we say goodbye to the Avengers we know, we get to experience a whole new band of heroes trying to save the world. With Disney’s new acquisition of 20th Century Fox, they now have X-Men and the Fantastic Four to play with.

Recently, Disney released their greatly anticipated film schedule for the next 4 years. On it you can see that there are 8 untitled Marvel films set to come out, giving us at least 2 Marvel films a year! We can expect to see sequels, breakout movies, and possibly an Avengers 5.

On top of this, Disney’s streaming service Disney+ is set to release in November of this year. Kevin Feige, the President of Marvel Studios, has already announced that this service will be the home to multiple original Marvel Shows. These shows will feature the original actors from the MCU making fans even more excited to see this continuation of Marvel. Some already announced shows are the Loki Series, The Falcon & Winter Soldier, Wanda/Vision and Hawkeye

Information about the future of Marvel is under lock and key, but as they slowly get released we will be sure to keep a hawk’s eye on spoilers and updates!
