Alt Bloom Brings Us Vibes With “West Coast”

Offering the perfect vibes for windows-down cruising through LA, Alt Bloom’s newest single “West Coast” definitely needs to be put on your Chill playlist this year! We got a chance to catch up with him between his traveling and music-making to learn what went into producing “West Coast.”

Hi Ethan! Thanks for talking to us today. Congrats on your new single by the way! “West Coast” is definitely in our vibes playlist here at MDRN. We have a question we want to ask first. We noticed you’re traveling quite a bit recently, where are you at this very moment?

Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to talk about my project! I have been traveling but currently am back in LA. For the last 10 days I’ve been doing live acoustic videos for each song on my EP across national parks in California. It was a blast of an experience and I can’t wait to share it!

Are the sights and places you’re visiting inspiring you to write new music? If so, how is it inspiring differently than other writing sessions?

I’d say stepping out of the studio always inspires new music. Living life is the only way to find new material and honest stories to write about. Being outdoors and out of LA keeps me in my own space artistically and makes me realize how vast the universe is which reminds me to keep on my path as we are all making it up on this little dot in space.

Now on to your new single, which is honestly so amazing. What about the west coast inspired this song? A person, a moment, a sight?

Thank you so much! Lyrics for me are always something that is bursting to be realized in my life and I just let them flow. “West Coast” is in that vein. But what really inspired the song was my roommate and producer Devin Damato. I was about to leave the house on a trip and heard him working on a track. The groove caught me and I started hearing the chorus melody and lyric right away. So I popped my head in his room and asked if I could write over what he was working on. About 20 minutes later the whole thing was written. I recorded a voice memo of it and when I got back from the trip, myself, Brian Phillips (producer), and Devin hopped in the studio and finished out the recording.

Your “October Eyes” video and “Stay” lyric video have some amazing visuals and really catch the feel of the song? What can we expect for the “West Coast” music video? We hope there’s a lot of driving with the roof down.

Thank you! For the “West Coast” video we wanted to capture parts of LA that people who don’t live here don’t recognize but locals see all the time. LA river, Crenshaw, downtown, etc… It’s funny the original idea was to be driving in all the locations but the director, Erica Eng, knows that I am a big longboarder so she suggested I do that for the video instead to ground it to who I am. It ended up being a blast of a day just doing two things I love to do, sight see and skate.

If you had to put “West Coast” in a vibes playlist, what other songs would you include? Can be more of your own, as well as other artists? What would you call that playlist?

Biking” Frank Ocean, “Morning” Marc E Bassy, “Habit” Still Woozy, “Small Worlds” Mac Miller, “Make It Better” Anderson Paak. I’d call it PB and Jam.

What is your usual method of attack when writing music? Do you have a certain order you like to work in?

I usually like to start with a palette of chord and groove. Whether it’s in my head or on a seed track. That helps me dive into a flow. Writing for me is a zen space. When I am in it I am in it 100%, committed to whatever the next few hours hold. It’s a ride every time. After that initial burst the song is either done or I spend the rest of the day or months putting the rest of the pieces together like a sudoku puzzle with a producer.

Is there a specific line or lyric that you wrote that you are super proud of? Which one?

In “West Coast” there’s a lyric, “Got a firework face, light up the whole place.” Not sure why I like that line, probably because I’ve only met a few people who can take out a room with a look and it reminds me of them when I sing it.

If you don’t mind, we’d like to get a bit deep. What made you create Alt Bloom? We know that it’s your stage name. Is Alt Bloom a completely different version of you? Or is he an extension of yourself?

Alt Bloom was a new step for me. I had so many things associated with my name that I wanted a fresh start. And I didn’t want the pressure of anything I had done before to fall on this new place for me. I wanted to feel free to take this music wherever my heart wanted to, folk, hiphop, pop, rnb, rock, and by switching my name it gave me that space to let go of whatever had been holding me back from doing just that.

We’re dying to know, do you have an album or EP in the works?

Right now there is so much music I have in the stash but the first step for me is an EP which we do have done and are planning to release a track at a time. Just waiting on those mixes ! An album for sure in the future, but for now I want to keep releases to EP’s so I can keep releasing at a quick pace.

Since you love traveling so much? Can we expect a tour soon?

As soon as I can get out I will! Right now the focus is building and making the music I will be touring on. I’m hoping to get out a bunch this year and am keeping my fingers crossed for the opportunity. I do love traveling and singing. Especially if I can find new nature spots to explore and climb. On top of that the band is gonna be a kick to play with! Good people.

What is your take on the MDRN day fan and how important they are to the industry right now?

Fans are everything. Without fans there isn’t an industry. Everything great that happens in this world takes a lot of people. Every success is do to the fact that masses are involved. DaVinci wouldn’t be remembered if millions of people didn’t reflect on and save his work. Even NASA wouldn’t be able to explore the worlds beyond without tax dollars from the masses. Every success is more that of the people and less the person. Though a person can stimulate the people it is the people that make the music connection so special.

What can Alt Bloom fans look forward to in 2020?

Lots of new music, lots of new visuals, lots of new places to explore, live shows and a presidential election.

Okay last question and it’s an important one… What do you call your fanbase? If you don’t have one yet, what would you like them to be called? (May we suggest Bloomers?)

Haha bloomers sounds a lot like boomers I’d have to be careful. We actually call ourselves tribe. Tribe means a lot to me because it’s a heavy part in human existence, finding your tribe. My base is about connecting with each other and I love to watch them slowly growing as this project begins. It’s only really been six months !

Thank you for talking with us, Ethan! MDRN Mag wishes you the best luck! We can’t wait for all the new music! If there’s any last things you’d like to tell the fans, please do!

Thank you so much for taking the time. I’d like to tell people to get outside anyway you can. Staring at the stars, some trees, and getting fresh air does so much more the soul than any other thing in this world. Get out tribe!

Megan Thee Stallion and Normani Shine in New Video

normani-megan-thee-stallion-birds-of-prey-diamonds

Joining together for an amazing collaboration to start off the new year, Megan Thee Stallion and Normani teamed up in turning an iconic anthem for women into a hot track for the new Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) movie. The Houston natives released “Diamonds” as a single off the soundtrack, Birds of Prey: The Album, and man did they shine in the new video.

The song was perfect for the duo, which makes sense because it was written by no other than Megan and Normani, along with Tayla Parx and Louis Bell. The new track takes inspiration from Marilyn Monroe‘s infamous, “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” performed in the 50’s hit film, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes but takes a nice twist with lyrics like, “All the best things in life come for free/ But don’t you think that applies to me.”

Visuals for the song fit the Birds of Prey movie to a T, with exclusive scenes from the movie itself and its star, Margot Robbie, as Harley Quinn thrown in so effortlessly it looked as if it were all from the same scene.

Catch Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) out in theaters on February 7th!

Morbius Is Here And It Looks Fangtastic

morbius

Everyone needs to stop what they’re doing this instant and watch the Morbius trailer.

Morbius is the new Marvel film we can expect from the Sony Marvel Universe (which is not to be confused with the MCU… Which Spider-Man is in). It’s about a doctor that is dying and is trying to cure his rare blood disease… But instead infects himself with vampirism.

Jared Leto as a vampire?… Sign. Us. Up.

In the trailer there are many easter eggs leading back to Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man movies.

Do you see what we see? This puts us post Spider-Man: Far From Home after *SPOILER ALERT* Mysterio tells the world that Peter Parker is Spider-Man and makes him out to be a villain.

Also, like. Vulture is literally in the trailer. That is a direct tie in. So like if Sony could give us Tom Holland, Tom Hardy, and Jared Leto in a movie together? … And then bring them all in a MCU movie together, that’d be great.

As a Marvel stan myself, it’s my theory that Sony/Marvel are creating their rendition on the Sinister Six but only time will tell. Until then you can find us watching this trailer on repeat.

Let us know what you think of the trailer in the comments down below or on Twitter!

Tati Beauty Is Launching A New Product!

tati beauty

Say hello to the Blendiful!

The second product that Tati Beauty will launch, Tati Westbrook announced yesterday on Twitter that something new was coming. But the speculation only grew from there, with a photo the only clue as to what the product was!

Now, we have a full launch video, explaining it all.

This is what Tati had to say about the new product;

This tool is such a necessary item to create a perfect canvas very quickly, and effectively. It’s great for touchups, its hygenic, you can wash it, it’s so many things. And the design in it is flexible, and plyable, and blendible, and bendy enough, that youre not going to look at it and not know what to do.

Tati also explains her aim with the product was to make it large enough to cover every step of your makeup routine; primer foundation, concealer, powder, contour, and more. Along with a smaller puff for on-the-go. Tati also compared the smoothness of the application to expert cake-icers. We trust her. We believe it.

Photo: Tati Westbrook

The Blendible is priced at $18 for both the large and smaller puff.

We can also expect to see a video soon of Tati applying her whole face using the puff. As if we need it. We’re buying it anyway.

Additionally, Tati said her much sought-after Textured Neutrals Volume 1 palette was restocking tomorrow too! HI, OUR CREDIT CARDS ARE READY. Check out the video above to get the full rundown.

You can buy both products on the Tati Beauty website from 10am PST tomorrow.

Sabrina Brings Chills With A Musical Trailer For Pt 3

Sabrina

Ladies and gents, we’re headed back to Greendale with Sabrina. We’ve been dying to go back. And good for that, because by the looks of the trailer we’re headed straight to hell. After the shocking twist in the season two finale, we’ve been going crazy wondering what’s going to happen next.

From the trailer above, we can tell that we’ve barley (Nicholas) scratched the surface on the crazy stuff about to go down. In the song, Sabrina sings about saving her love (Nicholas) from the devil. And she’s willing to pay whatever price she has to pay.

Also seen in the trailer, we can see that there will be lots and lots of new spells to be cast and seances to be done… So our only question is this:

What spell can we use to make it January 24th already?

David Bowie: Forever A Legend

David Bowie
Today would have been the late singer’s 73rd birthday.

73 years ago, a baby boy was born by the name of David Robert Jones. Little did the world know then that a showman, a legend, an icon was born.

David Bowie is easily one of the most influential artists not just in the 20th century…but ever. He was someone who was so effortlessly themself and never let anyone tell them otherwise.

In both music and movies, Bowie showed a creative force that no one could ever close to replicating. With his own unique style, which often was androgynous, Bowie opened doors for others who were far from normal, in the best way.

Bowie was such a performer in his time, bringing costume and theatrics to the stage, which wasn’t very common then. His videos often included him in make-up which, while many were put off by it, helped shape the music, film and fashion we know today.

The Showman

From his first album, Hunky Dory, to his last, Blackstar, Bowie has tons of hits under his belt. With him constantly reinventing his stage personas, fans were always eager to see who and what David would do next. Here are some of his personas.

David Bowie: Though this is his regualr standard self, he did give himself a new last name. From Jones to Bowie. He named himself after American pioneer and creator of the Bowie knife, James Bowie.

Ziggy Stardust: A bisexual demigod in red boots. This was character that gave Bowie the breakthrough he needed. The album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars  is now considered one of the greatest albums of all time and his songs provide a critical note on matters like politics, drugs and sexual orientation.

Aladdin Sane: “A lad insane” is said to be Bowie’s “half brother Terry who has schizophrenia.” Aladdin came to light when Bowie killed off Ziggy Stardust onstage at a London gig, introducing his new era. The Aladdin Sane album which features the self titled track and the hit “The Jean Genie.”

The Thin White Duke: This persona happened during David Bowie’s “dark years.” He was struggling with a heavy hard drug addiction and stress. From here came the album, Station to Station. This alter ego is a troubled man, who sings of romance but is completely numb to feelings. The Duke had platinum blond hair and was usually dressed in a white shirt, black trousers and a waistcoat. It is his most controversial persona and the Thin White Duke has been called a psychopathic aristocrat and an immortal zombie.

The Blind Prophet: His last and most heartbreaking character. The Blind Prophet came from the Blackstar album. In the video Lazarus, he is a blind prophet telling himself of his own death. This whole album is a goodbye message to his adoring fans. Knowing he was dying and wouldn’t be around much longer, he wanted to give one last gift. It even features the lyrics “look up here, I’m in heaven,” hoping to give fans a slight ease.

The Actor

Bowie’s film and television career are almost if not equally as impressive and inspiring as his music career. He held leading roles in several feature films, including The Man Who Fell to Earth, Just a GigoloMerry Christmas, Mr. LawrenceThe HungerThe Linguini Incident, and arguably his biggest film Labyrinth.

You can’t forget the endless amounts of documentaries made!

The Influencer

David Bowie has influenced some of the greatest artists of today. Most notably, Harry Styles as of recent. Harry Styles, we can wholeheartedly say, is the David Bowie of the recent generation. Pushing gender boundaries and being openly fluid. Bowie influences can be heard in Harry’s self-titled album and his recent album, Fine Line. Let’s not forget the fashion!

Another popular artist that takes direct influence from David is Lady Gaga. From Gaga’s first big hit, “Just Dance,” which featured her rocking a lightning bolt over her eye. Gaga has always expressed her love and admiration for the late singer. She even sports a portrait tattoo on her ribs of him.

Splash News

When Bowie passed, at the Grammy Awards that year, Lady Gaga honored him by performing a stunning performance of a Bowie medley. Starting with “Space Oddity” she performed variations of his biggest hits like “Changes,” “Suffragette City,” “Fashion,” “Let’s Dance,” and “Heroes.” While, of course, she nailed the vocals, she even dedicated her look that night to him, complete with the campy outfits, orange hair, and dramatic outfit changes. You can watch the full performance here.

A Legend Forever

Though he is now gone, David Bowie lives on forever through his movies, music, and family. A biopic movie is said to be in the works, however, it is also said that David’s family refuses to hand over the rights to his music.

David was a legend in music and film for his unique style and creativity, but he was so much more than that. He was unapologetically himself which was so rare for him on time. Wearing makeup, dresses and being openly bisexual were things that he did way before they were deemed “okay.” He has opened the door for not only musicians but people who just want to be themselves.

Bowie will forever be one of the greatest icons to ever grace the world.

Forever a legend.
