Today would have been the late singer’s 73rd birthday.
73 years ago, a baby boy was born by the name of David Robert Jones. Little did the world know then that a showman, a legend, an icon was born.
David Bowie is easily one of the most influential artists not just in the 20th century…but ever. He was someone who was so effortlessly themself and never let anyone tell them otherwise.
In both music and movies, Bowie showed a creative force that no one could ever close to replicating. With his own unique style, which often was androgynous, Bowie opened doors for others who were far from normal, in the best way.
Bowie was such a performer in his time, bringing costume and theatrics to the stage, which wasn’t very common then. His videos often included him in make-up which, while many were put off by it, helped shape the music, film and fashion we know today.
From his first album, Hunky Dory, to his last, Blackstar, Bowie has tons of hits under his belt. With him constantly reinventing his stage personas, fans were always eager to see who and what David would do next. Here are some of his personas.
David Bowie: Though this is his regualr standard self, he did give himself a new last name. From Jones to Bowie. He named himself after American pioneer and creator of the Bowie knife, James Bowie.
Ziggy Stardust: A bisexual demigod in red boots. This was character that gave Bowie the breakthrough he needed. The album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is now considered one of the greatest albums of all time and his songs provide a critical note on matters like politics, drugs and sexual orientation.
Aladdin Sane: “A lad insane” is said to be Bowie’s “half brother Terry who has schizophrenia.” Aladdin came to light when Bowie killed off Ziggy Stardust onstage at a London gig, introducing his new era. The Aladdin Sane album which features the self titled track and the hit “The Jean Genie.”
The Thin White Duke: This persona happened during David Bowie’s “dark years.” He was struggling with a heavy hard drug addiction and stress. From here came the album, Station to Station. This alter ego is a troubled man, who sings of romance but is completely numb to feelings. The Duke had platinum blond hair and was usually dressed in a white shirt, black trousers and a waistcoat. It is his most controversial persona and the Thin White Duke has been called a psychopathic aristocrat and an immortal zombie.
The Blind Prophet: His last and most heartbreaking character. The Blind Prophet came from the Blackstar album. In the video Lazarus, he is a blind prophet telling himself of his own death. This whole album is a goodbye message to his adoring fans. Knowing he was dying and wouldn’t be around much longer, he wanted to give one last gift. It even features the lyrics “look up here, I’m in heaven,” hoping to give fans a slight ease.
Bowie’s film and television career are almost if not equally as impressive and inspiring as his music career. He held leading roles in several feature films, including The Man Who Fell to Earth, Just a Gigolo, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, The Hunger, The Linguini Incident, and arguably his biggest film Labyrinth.
You can’t forget the endless amounts of documentaries made!
David Bowie has influenced some of the greatest artists of today. Most notably, Harry Styles as of recent. Harry Styles, we can wholeheartedly say, is the David Bowie of the recent generation. Pushing gender boundaries and being openly fluid. Bowie influences can be heard in Harry’s self-titled album and his recent album, Fine Line. Let’s not forget the fashion!
Another popular artist that takes direct influence from David is Lady Gaga. From Gaga’s first big hit, “Just Dance,” which featured her rocking a lightning bolt over her eye. Gaga has always expressed her love and admiration for the late singer. She even sports a portrait tattoo on her ribs of him.
When Bowie passed, at the Grammy Awards that year, Lady Gaga honored him by performing a stunning performance of a Bowie medley. Starting with “Space Oddity” she performed variations of his biggest hits like “Changes,” “Suffragette City,” “Fashion,” “Let’s Dance,” and “Heroes.” While, of course, she nailed the vocals, she even dedicated her look that night to him, complete with the campy outfits, orange hair, and dramatic outfit changes. You can watch the full performance here.
A Legend Forever
Though he is now gone, David Bowie lives on forever through his movies, music, and family. A biopic movie is said to be in the works, however, it is also said that David’s family refuses to hand over the rights to his music.
David was a legend in music and film for his unique style and creativity, but he was so much more than that. He was unapologetically himself which was so rare for him on time. Wearing makeup, dresses and being openly bisexual were things that he did way before they were deemed “okay.” He has opened the door for not only musicians but people who just want to be themselves.
Bowie will forever be one of the greatest icons to ever grace the world.
There’s people that when you see how old they’re turning you’re just like “Oh okay”. There are some people you’ll say “Ooh damn they’re that young… They look old af…”. And then you have people like Jared Leto…. Where you’re like “WTF WHERE IS YOUR YOUTH FOUNTAIN YOU YOUNG BEAUTIFUL PERSON YOU!?”
Jared turns 48 today and we just don’t understand how this man is pushing 50….
Like, excuse me sir…. Where? Is he drinking the water from Tuck Everlasting or something.
In case you wanted to see what young Jared looked like… Here’s a personal attack.
Yeah… We know… My So-Called Life was a show that aired in 1994 that Jared played the swoon-worthy Jordan Catalano… You’ve probably heard that name from your mom. The show only lasted one season… We were barely alive and we’re not over the fact that we were cheated out of more Jordan.
Jared has certainly made a name for himself over the past 48 (still not over that) years that he has existed. From his highly successful music career with his band, 30 Seconds to Mars, to his praised acting career and all of his philanthropic work in between. Jared is a force to be reckoned with.
We don’t care what you think or say about his Joker. We’d do absolutely anything to see those hours of cut footage because… Damn boi.
Jared has been in notorious movies such as Fight Club, American Psycho, Panic Room, Dallas Buyers Club, Blade Runner, and many many more.
In fact, Jared has a very big and important movie coming up and is set to release in 2020. He’ll be playing Dr. Michael Morbius in the movie Morbius.
Now if you don’t know who or what that is, let us explain. Jared Leto will be playing a Spider-Manantihero that is… Ready for this one… A VAMPIRE. Kind of fits his brand, huh? We just know that we need JaredLeto, Tom Hardy, and Tom Holland all in the same movie. And we could possibly get it. WE ARE CROSSING EVERYTHING!
Now before we go we just wanted to leave you with a special treat- uh- behind the scenes picture of Morbius.
On this day, 24 years ago, one of the greatest people in the world was born! Michael Clifford of 5 Seconds of Summer, along with his bandmates of course, has touched so many fans lives in the past 8 years.
So we asked the 5SOSFam to submit their special Michael stories and reasons why they love him, and of course the responses came flooding!
This article is for Michael, from the fans. We love you more than words can express!
I was in North Carolina waiting for meet 5SOS and the one and only thing that makes me nervous is Michael. Ugh but everything was fine and conversation wasn’t awkward! I asked him to flip off my camera and he was like “????” and I said “Michael stick your middle finger up for the picture.” LMAO. It went well and it’s my favorite selfie with him.
I love him because he is a talented king with amazing vocals and he’s a great guitarist UGH in this essay I will explain why he’s the loml….
I had issues with friends growing up , but Michael and the rest of the band were always there for me and always my shoulders to cry on and songs to listen to at my ups and downs
Michael, your smile can make even the grumpiest people crack even a little one. You project your love for the fans on the biggest screen, you truly get your message across that you love u. Not to mention you totally shred on guitar. Your goofiness taught me that it’s okay to be myself and that people would accept me for me, and that maybe not everyone will laugh at my jokes but it’s okay to laugh at my own even if no one else is. You are truly something special, we love you so much :).
My favorite Michael interaction is when I met him and Luke at the airport in like 2014 and I was nervous to talk to them so I was like I can take the picture even though Luke offered so like Michael had to bend down really awkwardly cause I’m short and like I’m really sorry bro. But we got to redo the selfie a few times more in the future so it’s all cool 😎😹
I love him because every time time I have met him, he has always seemed more happy to see me then I am to see him and you’d think that was impossible. He always makes sure to give his full attention and tries to meet as many fans as he can. He is literally a total sweet heart and gives the best hugs. (Sorry Calum).
I found 5SOS when I had just turned 14. I am now almost 19 and can fully say they have made a tremendous impact on me. Michael has a vibrant personality and his caring heart shines through to his fans and through the music. I have seen them twice and both times he put his whole heart into the words and songs he presented to us. Thank you Michael! <3
I love him because of his open heart and his extremely loving soul!
Michael is such a kind and caring person he makes sure all his fans know that they’re each individually appreciated and loved. He is very aware of mental health issues and I would consider him and advocate for it. He understands everyone’s struggles and makes us feel like we’re not alone and apart of something. His songwriting has spoken to me in so many ways and has gotten me through some of my darkest times.
I met him on halloween nights at the Dallas show (WWJ) and he was an absolute angel!! He talked to me about my tattoo and his and it was so so nice talking to him!!
I love him because he’s so caring and sweet and down to earth.
I saw Michael at the 5SOS show Nov. 6 and he was just the sweetest and funniest guy on stage. He rocked out so hard it made me happy. He seemed to enjoy himself a bit more than half the fans there, I’d that’s possible. Michael even mispronounced the city name on purpose and that in its self is something I will remember forever.
I love him because he seems to push himself above and beyond expectations. He’s funny and a very interesting guy. He seems like someone you want to be friends with, with only knowing the social media side of things. Seeing him do his thing at a show just brings out the fun rocking guy he truly is. I’m proud to be a fan of his.
Michael has always been such a rock for me. I met him this year, and he was such a sweetheart. He gave me a hug and asked how I was doing before we took our picture. Before I left he gave me such a tight squeeze and said he couldn’t wait to see me out in the crowd.
I love him because he’s absolutely amazing and deserves the absolute world!
I’ve been a fan of the band for almost 7 years now, but in the last 2 months Michael has done so much for me. I was always watching my friends have the best experiences at shows, and get noticed on Twitter, but never thought that would be me. By some miracle though, Michael wished me a happy birthday and followed me in September after being inactive for ages, and I didn’t think it could get better than that. But now here we are at the beginning of November, and I’ve gotten to dance 3 nights in a row with him, have gotten the tattoo I’ve always wanted written out by him, and have gotten to give Michael the biggest hug ever. He didn’t have to click on my follow button, he didn’t have to come back and meet us at the airport as he was late to check in for his flight, and he certainly didn’t have to hype my friends and I up every night when he saw us. He does all of that because he truly loves us, and the fans, and not many people can get to call their favorite band member their friend but we all can.
I love Michael because he always goes out of his way to make others happy.
This post contains sensitive material.
Michael Clifford helped me realize that even the people I look up to struggle and that it’s ok not to be ok all the time. He is also a really big reason that I am almost a year self harm free.
I love him because he isn’t afraid to be dorky and he geeks out sometimes which I find adorable!
There was one time where he tweeted “send me pictures of dogs” and i was the first person he tweeted “DOG” to and it was just a really funny interaction.
I love him because he is genuinely one of the best people on this planet. He’s so so so kind and humble and I LOVE talking to him. He’s always so smiley and always does the most for the fans. He gets it so much & he makes me so happy daily. His energy on stage is insane I LOVE watching him perform. He genuinely has one of the best personalities out there and always makes you feel safe and at home and I’ll love him forever.
I think it was back at the start of middle school where I was beginning to struggle mentally. I never had access to any help because my mother is completely positive that I’m overreacting. He became my home, the only person I knew I could return to when things went wrong. Knowing he was able to keep going when things went downhill, keeps me going today.
I love him because he is different. He’s not afraid to be himself. He makes me thinking of myself a lot and I can always relate to him. He’s so beautiful in every aspect and his kindness is one of my favourite things about him. He takes the time to show his love to each and every fan he meets.
I’ve met Michael twice and he’s always been the sweetest! The first time I met him he told me I had cool hair because it had blue in it and the second time he gave me such a big hug and was just so kind.
I love him because he’s so soft. He’s literally always so sweet to his fans and he’s also a rockstar on stage. I love watching that dude do his thing and kill it at every show.
I lost my Granny thanks to hospital “mistakes”. I was in a really bad place watching Michael on the old livestreams and twitch streams helped me remember who I was, and for the 1st time in a very long time i laughed. Laughed just like my Granny. Thank you, Michael. Happy Birthday!
This isn’t really a story, but like I’m actually obsessed with 5SOS and like just listening to their music makes me so much happier when I’m upset. Just like thank you for existing and also your dogs are adorable. You have an amazing voice and you are so good at guitar!!!
Michael has helped me in so many ways. He has never actually noticed me on Twitter but I was barricade on his side for the Halloween show in Dallas and his stage presence is absolutely everything. He was so interactive with us and even said we were losing our minds in the pit. I met him after that show and he was the absolute sweetest. He stopped and took pictures with everyone for about 30 minutes and talked to everyone. He was the one who asked for a picture too which I thought was cute and sweet. I honestly do not even know how to explain how he’s helped me outside of this experience though. But he has helped me become more confident with myself and helped me learn that it is okay to not be okay. I love him so much and could never thank him enough for the things he has done for me.
I love Michael because he has helped me truly find myself. He has also helped me realize how okay it is to not be okay and how to love who I am. I love how sweet and soft he is with fans too, he does not have to stop to talk to us and interact with us but he does. He made sure everyone had a photo even before he left. He is just the biggest sweetheart I know and I honestly have no idea what I’d do if I never found 5SOS.
I was depressed, self harming and found songs from 5SOS that made me feel happy, I looked up the band. I saw that Michael used to self harm and I remember feeling sad because I was still doing it and he stopped for the fans(i think). This made me stop and basically he saved my life and I am forever grateful.
I love him because he is just so precious and kind!
He is such a good genuine person. I met him and I melted in his arms. Hugging him is like hugging an old friend who you haven’t seen in a really long time even if it’s your first time meeting him. He talks to you and actually listens. An actual angel.
I love Michael because his love for us fans, his beautiful kind eyes, and his hugs <3
I’ve met Michael a few times, never gotten a picture or anything but had conversations and received a few hugs (his are the best). He always has a smile on his face and goes out of his way to see us, make time for us and just say “hi.” The couple times I’ve spoke to him have been really personal and prove convos but I just want to thank him and wish him the happiest of birthdays 🖤
I love him because he has always inspired me to keep going and never give up, I know he’s gone through a lot and how he manages to keep going for us and always put a smile on his face and say hi and put on shows amazes me. I can’t thank him enough for everything he’s done for me. Especially giving us “Jet Black Heart”.
I created the fan project to get Michael a Gibson SG guitar. On Sept 21st 2018 in Charlotte, NC he received it and wrote out a thank you note to everyone who helped donate. After that, he played it for the rest of tour when they would perform MYT as he went into the crowd. Then later on, he paid it forward to Kelsey Blackham, a girl in hospice care who deserves the world. All the of the guys also signed the guitar as well <3
The first time I met 5SOS was in NYC and I remember being so nervous to do or say anything, but Michael was so patient and understanding. I felt so comfortable being able to talk with him then, and every other time since I met him. He was so kind and that will always be something I remember.
Michael has the kindest heart and sweetest soul of anyone I’ve ever met. He’s patient, and so incredibly kind to everyone he meets.
Michael has probably always been my favorite. From the colored hair, skinny jeans, anime and video game loving nerd he is, I found a connection I adore to this day. Music is poetry and I’m all about words. I found acceptance and a space to love myself, found the band at a time where I was lost and transitioning from high school into college. I found 4 infectious, fun loving guys that loved each other and Michael has always stood out above the rest.
Where to begin though? I love him because of his fashion sense, which has grown so much. His hair styles are on point. Anime, music, and video game tastes are top notch. What’s not to love? I can’t speak much since I haven’t met him but he seems like the chillest funniest person to be around.
He always knows how to be there for his fans when they need him. He is so selfless and really cares about his fans.
I love him because he speaks out about a lot of important issues. He writes songs that mean a lot to so many people and are a home for a lot of his fans. He really puts special emphasis on things that his fans create as well which is really heartwarming.
Michael has helped me over the years understand that even when times are bad you still can keep your head up, he smiled at me and a friend of mine and that really made my day.
I love him because he’s so sweet and kind, funny , amazing person. Him and Crystal are so cute together in excited for them to get married! 🙂 He interacts with his fans, tells them to pet moose which is adorable.
Michael has helped me feel much better about myself when he mentioned on stage about seeing a therapist and that made me realize that it’s not a bad thing to get help if you need it.
I love Michael because he doesn’t try and change who he is to please anyone. I love how he handles the fans against his relationship. I’m so happy that he’s happy within himself, his band, and his relationship. I hope one day to meet him and tell him to his face how much of an amazing person he is.
I’ve never met Michael but i’ve seen him and the band live a lot of times and the energy and love he gave me just by singing and playing the guitar is unreal. He makes me feel heard, loved and cared for, he’s overall the nicest person I know and I’m so lucky I found out who he is 7 years ago and I’ve been growing up with him since.
I love Michael because he’s the nicest and most genuine person I know.
One of the main reasons I love Michael is the fact that even after all this time he’s still so uniquely himself. He’s such a dork online and it’s nice seeing someone just be goofy online about random stuff or interacting with fans. He’s also so insanely talented it’s crazy. Every time I see a video of him playing guitar it blows my mind how incredible he is as a musician. He is someone who really deserves all the good that has come his way from how he treats fans and the skill he possesses!
I’ve met him 3 times and I’m so excited to see him next month because I won an actual m&g. But each time he was so sweet and my heart melted. Meeting someone you really admire can be nerve wracking because they usually don’t have a lot of time or have a lot of people trying to get their attention so it was so lovely how each time he did his best to be in the moment. I miss him so much and he is so precious.
I love him because his big green eyes. How when you meet him, he gives you his full attention. And how hugging him feels like the safest and coziest thing. How he’s so enthusiastic when fans share special things with him. I’m gonna cry in class.
The way Michael cares about the fans, about the band, about everyone is so special. It makes everyone feel special and feel like they belong. 5SOS is a safe place and Michael Clifford is here to keep it that way.
I love him because he (and the rest of 5SOS) got me through a very rough time. They do that for a lot of people. Michael cares about other people so much, it’s so pure and the way he loves other people makes him lovable. Also he has cool dogs.
I’ve never really had any Twitter or real life interactions with Michael but he has still helped me in so many ways! High school was a hard time for me. I was sick all of the time and was absent a lot. It was hard for me to keep close friends because I was never around. I was lonely for at least my first two years of HS and I hated it. When I found 5SOS I quickly became obsessed. Michael specifically was my favorite because I loved his personality. Watching Keeks and Youtubevideos became my favorite past time when I was home alone and watching Michael videos really helped keep me positive!
I love him because his positive, goofy, and pure vibes truly radiate, making him very personable and lovable!
Michael has always meant so much to me, but in a different way than the other three. Michael reminds me so much of my little brothers. Their innocence and childlike wonder, their love for music and what they do, and their love for the people in their life.
I love Michael because he gave my little brothers a role model and idol. Both of my brothers have quite a few medical problems, including Autism. They grew up feeling very frustrated in not having a way to really express themselves. Luckily they always looked up to me and copied whatever I was doing. So since I was into 5SOS, so were they. And soon enough 5sos became their favorite band. My brothers fell in love with Michael, his dyed hair, and quircky-ness. They quickly wanted to be just like him. Because of Michael, my brothers have found music as their outlet. They even learned how to play “Amnesia” as a Christmas present to me one year. So all I can say is, Thank You. You not only saved me, but my brothers as well. And I can never repay you for that.
Just in case we didn’t say it enough… what’s one more time?
We love you, Michael! We are so grateful for everything that you and the boys do for us fans. Nothing goes unnoticed. We wish you the very happiest of birthdays! Give extra cuddles to Crystal, Southy, and Moose for all of us!
