The Nights of Horror Round Table

nights of horror

There are many great ways to celebrate Halloween. MDRN MAG did 31 Days of Halloween, where we touched on all of our favorite spooky things. But YouTube channel “The Nights of Horror” celebrate Halloween all year long. I sat down with the faces of Nights of Horror recently, Anthony and Sam, and we talked all things horror in this exclusive interview!

The Nights of Horror covers one topic, horror. That is such a specific topic to cover, why did you decide to box yourselves into that category?

Anthony: When I originally started the channel, I wanted to cover only Hollywood Horror Nights, but as the off-season came around, it becomes incredibly difficult to stick to that, so I branched out to all things horror to keep with the horror vibe of the overall channel!

What made you decide to start the this YouTube journey?

Anthony: There was a group who are now our friends called the TLEV Media, but they were originally known as The League of Extraordinary Vloggers! They did something similar and I thought what the hell, I have an opinion about the event, might as well start a channel as well. They were the main inspiration behind the channel!

Sam, I know horror isn’t your favorite genre. What made you decide to join the channel knowing you’d have to do things (for example, mazes) that you don’t really enjoy?

Sam: I decided to join the channel because I was a big fan of the channel prior. Tony was doing the channel alone for a while and I thought I would offer to join. Plus I wanted an excuse to hang out with one of my good friends.

What is your favorite thing about the Halloween season?

Anthony: I love all the So-Cal haunts that come around and the overall vibe of it! There’s just something about getting scared I love!
Sam: I think my favorite part of Halloween is how excited people get about it. Many people get to be creative and show a side of them that they often have to reserve.

YouTube is full of amazing creators, who is your dream person to do a collab with, or interview, on Youtube?

Anthony: For me, I would love to collab with Dead Meat James or do something with Blumhouse Productions! Hell even Crypt TV!

Sam: My dream collaboration would be with Jordan Peele. I love his movies and would love to pick his brain on the podcast.

What are your goals for the channel? Is it more number based (number of subscribers, or views) or, do you have a specific goal in mind?

Anthony: For me it’s just about taking it the next step further. Eventually I would love to make short horror films and submit them to indie horror film festivals. I just love making content and it’s been a learning process as I go! So every time we hit new milestones or create new content, I learn more and more and apply that knowledge to the next project!

What’s your favorite Horror story?

Anthony: I’ve always been fascinated with real-life serial killers and cult leaders. People like Charles Manson and The Night Stalker. To me, real horror stories is what inspired the iconic slashers we see today!

A popular opinion today is that there are no good horror movies anymore? What do you think? Do you prefer the classics or the new wave?

Anthony: I mean when you hit with a question like that, it’s hard to say! The classics are iconic because it’s what brought horror to what it is today. You look at the Classic Universal Monsters and all of them paved the way for icons like Michael Myers, Freddy Kruger, Jason Voorhees just to name a few. However you look at movies like Insidious and the Conjuring and there still is faith of modern day horror being just as scary as the originals. I feel like it’s about the same. I love them both!

What do you look for in a good horror movie? Is it the plot? The gore? The jump scares? The special fx?

Anthony: I mean for starters, the plot has to be good. I feel if there is no story to it and it’s just killing, it kinda gets old and repetitive. Gore is always fun to have but not too much. Jump scares are always a must for most horror movies. Some horror movies don’t even need them because the story is so good. And when you bring special effects to horror, most of the time I’m a sucker for practical effects. I feel like that’s what makes horror right there!

What is your favorite Halloween Costume you’ve done in the past?

Anthony: My all time favorite has to have been the one year I was a psycho clown! Had a lot of fun scaring the trick or treaters that year.
Sam: I was Darth Maul one year when I was younger. The makeup my mom did was super accurate, I think that has to be the coolest costume I’ve done!

One of the biggest topics you cover on your channel is Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood. What were some of your favorite things from the event and biggest disappointments?

Anthony: One of the things I absolutely love about HHN is the fact that they bring some of the most iconic properties to life. 2019 has been my favorite year strictly due to the fact of Killer Klowns From Outer Space! One of my all time favorite movies! The one downside is if they run out of budget, they use a lot of black walls.

If the Nights of Horror Team were to star in a horror movie together, what horror stereotypes would everyone fit into?

I feel like Sam and I would be the people who were smarter than everyone else and know good from wrong in that type of situation, but I always imagined me as the secret killer revealed at the end! Robert would be the jock that everyone hates in the beginning of the movie but towards the end does something to make the audience love him like a sacrifice. You, Celine, on the other hand, I feel would be the one person who would be the secret mastermind behind it all.

Can you help us settle a debate here at MDRN MAG? Nightmare Before Christmas: Halloween movie or Christmas movie?

I would say the first half is Halloween but the second half is Christmas. Ultimately it’s bringing to iconic holidays together and putting a sinister twist on Christmas. More Halloween if you ask me!

YUNGBLUD Welcomes Darkness With “Die A Little” Video

Die A Little

YUNGBLUD dropped a spooky music video for “Die A Little” on Halloween. And boy does it deliver the spooks.

Complete with an interrogation, demonic possession, slight insanity, and a hint of murder… we are living a lot for “Die A Little”.

The song was originally released back in August for the 13 Reasons Why soundtrack, so this is definitely just a nice trick or treat for us.

When releasing the video YUNGBLUD said,

This song is about realizing and accepting the dark part of your mind that is trying to get out. People who don’t understand what you are going through will try to interfere and generalize what you’re feeling. That can end up with them getting as hurt as you. This video is a call out to take mental health seriously.

Also can we just say how handsome he looks in this video. That is all.

How To Have The Best Halloween Of Your Life!

Happy Halloween, Witches! It’s officially the greatest day of the year! It’s the day all the ghouls, goblins, ghosts, and monsters come out to play. In peace, of course.

We know that it can be stressful trying to figure out what to do on actual Halloween, so we have so tips to help you have the best Halloween you can!

#1

Watch Hocus Pocus. This is a must. You cannot skip this… or else. We also created a whole list of fun spooky movies to watch here. But again, this one has to be watched. It’s illegal to not watch it on Halloween.

#2

Eat all of the candy you want. It’s in the Halloween rule book that October 31st is a national cheat day for everyone’s diets. Ask anyone.

Halloween

#3

Go to a local haunted house! No Halloween is complete without a little first person spooking! We promise it’s fun!

Halloween

#4

Have a seance. Conjure up some spirits and have a fun conversation. We know it can get lonely on Halloween, so….

Halloween

#5

Make spooky treats for your friends! Who doesn’t love marshmallow ghosts and pretzel spiders?!

Halloween

#6

Head down to your nearest sewer to say “Hi” to our friend, Pennywise. We’re sure he’d love to have you for diner. Over for dinner, we mean! Yeah. That’s totally what we mean. He’s harmless.

Halloween

#7

Dress up! Literally, the best part of Halloween is dressing up, as anything you want! Just for the love of all things Spooky please don’t be a black cat… There’s too many.

Halloween

#8

Try opening a portal to another dimension, cause… why not? If you try though, all we ask is that you go to the Upside Down and grab our man Hopper. We miss him and really need him back.

#9

Be as weird and creepy as you want! If you want to walk around while doing a back bend and screaming like The Grudge… do it!

In all seriousness, it’s Halloween. And you should be able to dress and be as creepy and freaky as you want. It’s the one day of the year that people aren’t judged for being weird (it should be everyday but…). Halloween is about having fun and spooks. And that’s all we really want in life.

Have an absolutely spooktacular All Hallows Eve!

Why Every Horror Fan Should Appreciate Ice Nine Kills

ice nine kills

Ice Nine Kills is a band from Boston, MA that formed in 2002. Some may know them from their Warped Tour days, but others may know them from their love for horror movies.

Frontman, Spencer Charnas, has always been very vocal and open about his absolute love for all things horror. So he did the ultimate thing you could do. Create a whole album based on the best horror movies!

The Silver Scream is the ultimate album to listen to during Halloween, or if your just an avid horror fan. In each song, Charnas has such a creative way of telling the story of the movie; including the littlest moment and facts. It’s actually awe inspiring.

The album came out Halloween of 2018 and since then the band has debuted multiple music videos for different songs that, while they relate to each movie, when put together creates a movie itself. We love that. Let’s take a look at the track listing.

An American Nightmare – A Nightmare On Elm Street

The album kicks off with an homage to none other than Mr. Kruger. The whole idea of the song is about a killer stalking you in your dreams. Ice Nine Kills vocalist, Spencer says, “The entire premise of a killer hunting you in your dreams is so genius because no matter what you do, no-one can escape eventually falling asleep, so your death at the hand (or glove rather) of Mr. Krueger is inevitable.”

Thank God It’s Friday – Friday The 13th

Of course, where there is Freddy, there must be Jason. About a boy drowning because of sex-crazed teens not watching him and a vengeful mother. Spencer says “It’s our own take on important character dialogue from the movie and a campfire singalong that turns from rapidly from a Kumbaya vibe to a machete-slicing breakdown.”

Stabbing In The Dark – Halloween

Stated as a “love letter to the night he came home,” the band drops subtle hints and details in the song about the movie. The song takes you through Michael’s escape from the asylum all the way to Haddonfield where the bloodfest begins.

SAVAGES – Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The song is about an entire cabalistic family and to not mess with them. Do we need to say anything else?

The Jig Is Up – Saw

This song is about the 2004 horror movie that broke molds. Saw was a new take on a blood bath film about a man trying to make his victims not take their life for granted… with interesting methods. This song is about his latest victims from the moment they press play on the recorder. And the song quite literally starts with the sound of a tape recorder. It’s the little things.

A Grave Mistake – The Crow

A tragic love story of a man and his wife murdered the night before their wedding. The Crow gave us an anti-hero that is avenging the death of him and his wife. The song is not only meant to be an homage to the movie, but to Brandon Lee (The Crow) who died while filming on set.

Rocking The Boat – Jaws

Shark. Boat attack. Jaws.

Enjoy Your Slay – The Shining

One of the greatest horror movies of all time deserves a song, right? Right. And Ice Nine Kills delivers. With little hints of the movie like “redrum,” and “Hey danny, come play with us”. What is super cool about this song is that the song is actually in the perspective of the hotel.

Freak Flag Fly – The Devil’s Rejects

Just like the movie The Devils Rejects, the song is raw, insane, and craziness. It definitely embodies the “watch who you fuck with” idea of the movie.

The World In My Hands – Edward Scissorhands

Written about one of the greatest movies of all time, this song captures the innocence of Edward as he’s cursed with weapons for hands. He sees how people are terrified and stand-offing from him and doesn’t understand why, but his light, Kim, is there. It finishes with the lyric “Cause when it snows, It falls to you from me” which captures the ending perfectly.

Merry Axe-Mas – Silent Night, Deadly Night

Silent Night, Deadly Night is a low-budget horror movie from 1984. While at the time not the greatest, it now holds it “cult classic” title. This also gave us the great and punny lyric of “Fa-la-la-la-la, Feliz navi-dead!”

Love Bites – An American Werewolf In London

Like the movie, this song has a ver sharp and sarcastic tone to it. It has comedic lyrics while still painting the gruesome picture that is American Werewolf In London.

IT Is The End – IT

The final chapter of both the album and music video series is “It Is The End”, clever. The movie is obviously about It, with the very clown-like and carnival feel to the vocals and overall song itself. With lyrics like “When I feast on your flesh” and “we all float down here” any fan of the franchise (definitely us) will appreciate this song.

The Grudge Trailer Has Finally Dropped

Just in time for Halloween, the trailer for The Grudge has dropped! The film takes place in the same timeline as the 2004 film of the same name, and will also act as a re-imagining of the American film series, which is based on the Japanese Ju-On films.

Synopsis: “A single mother and young detective, Muldoon (Riseborough), discovers that a suburban house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death. Now, she runs to save herself and her son from demonic spirits from the cursed house in her neighborhood.”

Produced by horror icon Sam Raimi (Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe), this one is sure to not let us down. Director Nicolas Pesce says this version of the grudge is “really f**ked up.”

And he knows that there will be people calling this just another remake, so at a discussion panel he states,

The Grudge is like a virus; it’s super-contagious. So the fact that it would stay in the tiny city of Tokyo is unrealistic. It exists in Asia, Europe, Africa, in America, because it has spread. I know a lot of people think this is a remake of a remake, which is isn’t. This movie exists in the same world as the Japanese movie, we’re just adding a chapter.

The film stars John Cho (Harold & Kumar), Andrea Riseborough (Birdman), and the horror icon that is Lin Shaye (Insidious, A Nightmare On Elm Street)

The Grudge is set to be released January 3rd, 2020.

Happy National Pumpkin Day!

Pumpkins are probably the biggest tell tale of all things fall and spooky. Jack-O-Lanterns, lattes, patches, and just the base color orange.

So in honor of our love for Pumpkins on this National Pumpkin Day, here are some fun facts!

Pumpkins are very high in potassium and Vitamin A.

6 out of the 7 continents grow pumpkins! Antarctica is the only place pumpkins cannot grow.

The biggest pumpkin pie ever was over 5 ft in diameter and weighed over 350lbs!

The record for the biggest grown pumpkin comes in at 1,140lbs!

They used to be used for removing freckles and curing snake bites.

Pumpkin carving originally started when Irish settlers came to America and realised that carving Pumpkins were a lot easier than carving turnips for Halloween.

Well, we hope you learned something on this beautiful National Pumpkin Day! Now go to your local Starbucks and treat yourself to a PSL!
