Horror Movie References You Missed in the AHS: 1984 Premiere

It’s finally here! The new season of American Horror Story finally premiered and we are dying!

This season of AHS we go back to the year 1984 and follow a group of friends as they get a new summer job. Except it’s nothing like they expect.

It’s the classic plot of slasher summer camp and rational girl deemed crazy. So we won’t recap the whole episode for you. Instead we’ll point out all the horror movie references in the first episode “Camp Redwood.”

Friday the 13th

This one is pretty self explanatory… Summer camp gone mass murder. Camp Redwood also looks a lot like Camp Crystal Lake.

This one was so slight you may have missed it. When Montana (Billie Lourd) and Trevor (Matthew Morrison) are in the lake, we see the headlights of a car flash indicating the pair is being watched. Though the car may not be alive, it’s definitely a nod to Christine.

In this episode we learn that mass murderer, Mr. Jingles (John Carroll Lynch), has escaped from the asylum. He’s out to get the one person who survived him… Sound familiar? Mr. Jingles giant body structure also resembles dear ole Mikey.

At the end of the episode the payphone is ringing when the counselors were told all the lines were dead. Brooke (Emma Roberts), for some unknown reason, chooses to leave the cabin to answer the call. Only to hear the sound of keys jingling. Now, she wasn’t asked her favorite movie, but she was definitely being taunted. Is this a foreshadowing moment saying that some friends are behind this?

I Know What You Did Last Summer

This movie is referenced a few different ways ways. First, the obvious… A group of friends accidentally run someone over and ultimately end up lying about it. Second, the way Mr. Jingles is dressed. Trench coat and rain boots, super fisherman-y vibes.

Children of the Corn

This also related to the hiker being ran over. We learn that the hiker was running from Jingles by noticing that his ear has been cut off. So we can pretty much assume that’s who the hiker was running from before being hit. This also happens in Children of the Corn when Joseph is being attacked and runs ultimately being run over by Burt.

The Night Stalker

This is probably the most obvious reference. The Night Stalker is a movie about real-life serial killer Richard Ramirez who was active 1984-1985. In the show, we see Brook attacked by a young man who calls himself “Night Stalker.” He sneaks in through a window and steals valuables. Exactly like the real life Richard Ramirez did.
