Disney Live-Action: What’s to Come

Disney is known for bringing animated classics to life. Over the years they’ve found their balance between animation and adaptation. It’s something they tested in 1994 with The Jungle Book. Following suit in 1996 and 2000 respectively, 101 and 102 Dalmatians.

A decade would pass before Disney would release another live action adaptation of one of their animated films. In 2010, Alice in Wonderland was born. 2014 birthed Maleficent, and 2015 Cinderella. In 2016, The Jungle Book would have it’s second live action adaptation.

Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016) serves as another adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. More popular titles would be announced in the years to come. Beauty and the Beast (2017) starred Emma Watson alongside Dan Stevens and Luke Evans. In 2018, Christopher Robin of the Winnie the Pooh franchise would hit big screens. 2019 brought us Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King – and that’s only so far.

Here’s what we can look forward to in the months to come: Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and Lady and the Tramp. Both with release dates in October and November of 2019. Mulan, minus the musical aspect and her kickass dragon Mushu, will grace theaters in March of 2020. Part of the 101 Dalmatians franchise, Cruella is set to be released in December 2020.

Those are only the movies with set release dates, there are also films that are being put into production and ones that are still in talks.

Disney is set to produce around seven more live action reboots definitely. The Little Mermaid reboot is probably the one with the most buzz, starring Halle Bailey and we’re hoping Harry Styles. The Sword in the Stone, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Lilo & Stitch are reboots that have no set release date. Along with The Jungle Book sequel, Pinocchio, Rose Red (Snow White franchise), and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Reportedly, they have multiple planned projects that are set to be released via Disney+, a streaming program they’re putting into effect. It’s not confirmed whether or not all of these planned projects will only be available to monthly subscribers, or if they’ll hit theaters. A live action adaptation of Peter Pan is in the works, along with a live action film about Tinker Bell.

Disney has a lot of things coming our way, but there’s still so much more.

Remakes of Hercules, Pocahontas, Atlantis: The Lost Empire (The Little Mermaid franchise), The Black Cauldron, and Treasure Planet are also rumored. There’s speculation of a spin-off of Prince Charming, called Charming, is in development with Stephen Chbosky both writing and directing. A sequel to Aladdin could be in the works, which would be based off of the film The Return of Jafar, along with a prequel under the title Genies. The prequel, written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, was announced in 2015 with Tripp Vinson set to produce it.

That’s all Disney has let slip to the public for now. But, who knows what other animations will be adapted to live-action films. Disney has yet to hit classics such as Bambi (1942), or The Fox and the Hound (1981). Not to mention the new generation of animation: The Princess and the Frog (2009), Tangled (2010), Wreck-It Ralph (2012), Frozen (2013), Big Hero 6 (2014), and Moana (2016).

And don’t get us started on Pixar
