Zayn Malik is technically a former member of One Direction, but OT5 forever in our hearts.
And to think, if his mother wouldn’t have talked him out of bed and into the audition the morning, we wouldn’t have had the band we all grew to love. Auditioning with an RnB classic, “Let Me Love You,” by Mario he moved onto the next round, before being eliminated in the solo division. He was then grouped together by Simon Cowell, with Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne to make history as part of one of the biggest boy bands in the world.
The Journey with the Band
As part of One Direction, Malik moved on to break many records and win hundreds of awards with the band. Known for his signature vocals that stood out in many of the tracks put out by the group, it was definitely a loss when he decided to depart, prompting the band’s hiatus soon after.
We all remember that faithful day, as we’re sure all Directioners do and the horrible feeling when we saw that statement from the band twitter account at 11:30 am on March 25th, 2015.
ZAYN’s Solo Career
That same month, Zayn Malik was already seen at a recording studio and in July of that year he announced he had signed a recording deal with RCA Records. In January of 2016, he broke out into a new genre with his debut solo single, “Pillowtalk.” The single went straight to the top within many countries, even hitting the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
ZAYN released his debut album, Mind of Mine in March of 2016 with an alternative RnB vibe. The album debuted at number one in the UK, US, Australia, Canada and many other countries and it made Malik the first British male solo artist to have a debut go number one.
At the end of that year, Malik released a duet with Taylor Swift for the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack called, “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever.”
During his time as a solo artist, Zayn Malik has also collaborated with Sia, PartyNexDoor and Nicki Minaj.
In 2017, ZAYN released his second album, Icarus Falls, containing 27 tracks and following the storyline of fallen greek mythology royalty. Malik had a few small promotional performances for each album but has yet to embark on a tour.
This year, Malik remade the timeless Disney song, “A Whole New World” with Zhavia Ward for the live-action remake of Aladdin.
We can’t wait to see what new projects ZAYN has up his sleeve and are patiently waiting for a solo tour.
